I’ve been dry brushing intermittently now for almost 7 years. The first dry brush I bought was an Elemis one from centre parcs, over the years I have replaced this a couple of times. I recently bought a Hydrea professional body brush (firm/extra firm bristles), because being the badass that I am, I love the way it feels against my skin. I like the added exfoliation, which is somewhat satisfying and my skin feels silky and smooth after using it. If you are new to dry brushing I recommend you start with a softer brush like the Elemis body detox skin brush and build your tolerance up. I usually spend 5-10 minutes dry brushing before I shower in the morning. This is the one thing I couldn’t do without . I’ve even got my husband hooked on it. I use a dry brush on my son (who is 4 years old), to help him to relax before bed. He often gets involuntary twitches when he is tired and this helps to settle him and sleep better.
Benefits of dry brushing
Dry brushing can help you feel energized in the morning, it helps stimulate your circulation. Whilst I haven’t given up coffee yet, I do love the way it makes me feel; awake and alive. It can help stimulate the lymph nodes and aid lymphatic drainage, which removes toxins from the body. Dry brushing can also help the digestive system work more effectively. This is particularly beneficial for me being a coeliac sufferer (I say this lightly), or when I have had a particularly unhealthy weekend (eating rubbish and feeling bloated). Oh yes and the added bonus, it helps the appearance of cellulite by making the skin smoother and plumper, very handy before a holiday!
Method of dry brushing:
- Start at the souls of your feet and then up your legs in long, smooth strokes. I repeat this method 3 times over each section (you do more if you like, but I do it until my skin is slightly pink and not stinging). Brush towards the centre of the body (heart) where the lymph system drains.
- Repeat the same process with the arms, starting with the palm of the hand and brushing up the arm, towards the heart.
- On the stomach and armpits, brush in a circular clockwise motion.
- Do the same for the back, long strokes towards the centre of the body. My dry brush comes with a detachable long handle, which is pretty useful when dry brushing the nape and back.
