It’s Mother’s day soon. I ordered flowers for my Mum, because tradition has it that Mums get pampered on this day. I took a moment to think about our relationship and how it has evolved over the years.

Our relationship is complex. We’ve had our fair share of ups and downs, and haven’t always seen eye to eye.

When you become a Mum, it doesn’t come with a manual, you make the rules up as you go along. When I had my own children I realised how much my Mum had sacrificed for us, so we could have a better life. I may not have agreed with her parenting style, but then she was learning too. All it shows is that my Mum is human and humans are by their very definition flawed.

Over the years, our relationship has evolved. When I moved out and became more independent, we got closer to each other. They say ‘distance makes the heart grow fonder’ and I couldn’t agree more. Over time, we have become great friends; we laugh, joke and give each other honest opinions and feedback.

I admire my Mum in so many ways. She is; beautiful, intelligent, strong, determined, loyal, focused, honest (sometimes brutally) and a brilliant Grandmother. These are just a handful of her admirable qualities, which I hope I have inherited. She is my role model.

Happy Mother’s day Mum! Thank you for teaching me all I know about life. For watching over me and always ‘having my back’.
